Abstract

868,414. Sliding clasp fasteners. FLEX FASTENERS Ltd. Aug. 26, 1958 [Sept. 20, 1957], No. 26788/58. Divided out of 868,413. Class 44. A method for use in the manufacture of sliding clasp fasteners, comprises the steps of providing a tube 1 of nylon or other plastic material, the tube being split lengthwise, pressing at least a portion of the tube substantially flat, and while flat, punching or cutting out or otherwise removing portions of the tube walls so that after release of the pressure, split rings 7 remain which are provided with coupling elements 8, and are connected by bridge pieces 9 to form a string of connected interlocking members. The string may be fixed to a carrier tape 11 by sewing or gluing the edge thereof into the split or the string may be woven in to the tape by weft threads while the weaving of the tape proceeds. The tube may be flattened by opening the same at the split 2 so that edges 3 and 4 are remote from each other, or the tube may be pressed so that the edges 3 and 4 lie adjacent each other and the material of the tube forms two superimposed layers, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). In another arrangement, Fig. 9 (not shown), a twin tube is employed which is split at each side remote from a common centre portion. The tube is flattened and cut to produce cut-outs on each side of the centre part and the tube subsequently cut longitudinally through the centre part to produce two strings, each similar to that shown. The coupling elements of one string may. be displaced longitudinally in relation to the coupling elements of the other string. In an alternative arrangement Figs. 15-18 (not shown) the twin tube is split at the common centre portion and the coupling elements formed at the outer portions remote therefrom, the tube subsequently being cut longitudinally to produce two strings each similar to that shown. In the arrangement according to Fig. 19, a split tube is substantially flattened against a die 61 and cut-outs 66 are produced by a punch 62. In an arrangement according to Fig. 20, (not shown) the string is passed through openings in a ladder-like tape which is then bent about the bridge pieces of the string and the overlying parts of the tape secured by stitching or gluing. According to Figs. 21 and 22 (not shown) the string is secured to a tape between two branches at the edge of the tape and in which a third branch engages the split, respectively.
