867,808. Exhaust-silencers. WERNER GENEST GESELLSCHAFT FUR ISOLIERUNGEN. Nov. 7, 1957 [Nov. 8,1956], No. 34747/57. Class 7(2). A conical duct 2, Fig. 2, for ground muffling of a jet engine 1 has a perforated wall 3 backed by transverse partitions 6 partially delimiting chambers so packed with sound-insulating material as respectively to damp out sounds of different frequencies by giving acoustical wall impedances (ratios of the sound pressure on the material surface to the velocity normal to the wall of the air or gas particles in the sound field) in substantial accordance with the quantity 2apf (0.90-i0.38) where a is the corresponding duct radius, p is the density of the gas at the duct entry, f is the respective sound frequency and i is #-1. The material preferably has an optimum specific flow resistance substantially equal to the quantity 0.4pc (2a)/L<SP>2</SP> where p is the density of the gas adjacent the wall, c is the corresponding jet velocity, L is the chamber depth and a is the duct radius as before. The duct 2 may be coaxial with a cylindrical sheet metal casing 4, or eccentric therewith as shown in Fig. 8, the sheet metal wall 3 being supported in each case by longitudinal members 5 further delimiting the chambers, which may be filled with soundinsulating material, or have various walls lined or sprayed over with sheets, e.g. 9 or 10, thereof. Wire screens 11 of up to 8 cm. inter-wire spacing, are provided; they may have their meshes relatively offset or differently orientated and need not be at right angles to the duct axis.
