Abstract
The erosion resistant properties of a choke insert machined from commercially pure graphite are increased by vacuum impregnation with phenol formaldehyde, silicone, epoxy, urea formaldehyde, or melamine resin, followed by curing of the resin. The graphite may have a density of 1.66, a Brinell hardness of 50, a modulus of elasticity of 0.8 x 106 p.s.i., a tensile strength of 2200 p.s.i., and may contain minor amounts of sodium, calcium, boron, aluminium, and iron. Examples are given.
