Abstract
867,589. Glass manufacture. MINISTER OF AVIATION. June 2, 1959 [March 7, 1958], No. 7380/58. Class 56. A vitrified material for use as a dielectric is prepared by mixing ground metallic silicates and heating to a temperature to fuse all but the one of highest fusing point, grinding the resulting fused material and heating to a temperature below that fusing point so that the mixture becomes vitrified. Two examples are given in which aluminium, lead and boron silicates are prepared by fusing the appropriate oxides which, in the case of the aluminium silicate, may include some potassium oxide also. The silicates are ground, mixed in the required proportions with a small amount of free silica, fired and reground. They are then mixed with a binder, shaped and finally fired at a somewhat higher temperature at which a soaking period is allowed. Other silicates which may be used are those of calcium, barium, thorium, potassium, sodium, titanium, barium, cerium and strontium.
