Abstract
920,607. Glass and ceramic mixtures; vitreous-to-metal seals. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 26, 1959 [Nov. 29, 1958], No. 40201/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 56. A lead through conductor comprises one or more conductors surrounded by a thick-walled metal ring, the space between the conductors and the ring being filled with a sintered, glasslike mass consisting of a mixture of glass and ceramic particles dispersed in the glass, the expansion coefficient of the mass being lower than that of the metal of the ring, and the ceramic particles being smaller than 5 Á and comprising between 0.2% and 5% by weight of the mixture. The ceramic material may be e.g. alumina, for sterite or a titanium oxide, the glass-like material may be made from a glass powder having the following composition by weight: 69.5% of SiO2, 0.6% of Li2O, 7.2% of Na2O, 8.6% of K2O, 10.8% of BaO, 2.9% of Sb2O3. 0.2% of NiO, 0.1% of Cr2O3, 0.1% of CoO. About 5% by weight of Al2O3 with a particle size of about 1 Á is added to this powder, and the Specification gives directions for sintering, forming around the conductor, heating to form a sealed assembly, and subsequent controlled cooling.
