Abstract

867,529. Pneumatic conveyers. SMIDTH & CO., F. L. Oct. 7, 1957 [Oct. 5, 1956], No. 31340/57. Class 78 (1). In apparatus for feeding material, e.g. woodchips, into a conveyer of the kind comprising a rotor with blades 14, the air inlet 3 lies wholly, or largely, within the cross-sectional area swept at the inlet end by the blades during their rotation, the outlet 4 lies at least partly outside the cross-sectional area swept by the blades at the outlet end, and between the inlet and outlet the casing 1 for the rotor is shaped to form a channel 17 which terminates in the outlet. The hub 13 increases progressively in diameter from the inlet to the outlet along a curved line so that the channel 17 is of substantially uniform cross - sectional area throughout its length. The ends of the casing 1 are closed by plates 6, 7. The inner side of the trough at the inlet end lies radially outside the line generated by the outer edges of the rotor blades and through the gap 18 so formed air can pass from the inlet 3 to the channel without passing through a pocket of the rotor. A clearance 21 is provided between the plate 6 and the end of the rotor to permit a slight flow of air from the inlet 3 to prevent particles of material entering between them. The length of the inlet 2 to the casing is slightly less than that of the rotor chamber and the overhanging shoulders 26, 27, thus provided prevent feeding of the material directly against the ends of the pockets. One longitudinal side of the inlet 2 is provided with a shearing edge 28 which is inclned to the rotor axis. The other side of the inlet may have a similar shearing edge 29 which comes into action when the rotor is driven in the opposite direction.
