Abstract

867,003. Work benches. BRITISH STEEL CASTINGS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Feb. 18, 1960 [Feb. 19, 1959], No. 5725/59. Class 61. [Also in Group XXVIII] A fettling bench comprises a top consisting of a massive thickness of concrete pierced by holes extending from its upper surface to an enclosed space beneath the top and connected to an exhaust outlet, the surface of the concrete being provided with a tough resilient layer also pierced by holes. As shown the concrete top 1 is carried by brackets 2 from the inside of a metal frame 3 which may be circular, rectangular, L-shaped &c. The top is covered with a layer 4 of wood or hard bitumen pierced by lengths of metal pipe 5 cast into the concrete and protruding upwards for the layer to be fitted round the protrusions. The frame 3 carries rollers 7 to support an annulus 8 having a depending lip 9 fitting outside the rim 6, the annulus being spaced from the periphery of the top 1 by a gap that is covered over rather more than 180 degrees by openwork sheet 10 the rest of the gap being blanked off by a plate 11. A rear shield 12, consisting of sheet metal 13 lined by sound absorbing material, is rotatable with the annulus 8. An air duct 16 passes by a floor channel 17 to an exhaust fan. In a modification the frame is supported on legs and leads below the top to a rear exhaust outlet. The top is rectangular, the rear shield being fixed. In another modification the working surface is L-shaped. One or more doors may be provided in the frame.
