Abstract

Complex compounds of metals capable of forming oxides having amphoteric or acid properties are made by treating an oxide, hydroxide or an oxide hydrate of, or a salt of a volatile acid with, such a metal, with a solution of a di- or poly-basic organic complex-forming acid until at least one of the reactants is consumed, allowing the complex formation to reach completion, separating any excess reactant and, if desired, isolating the matured complex compounds. After consumption of one of the reactants a further amount of the consumed reactant may be added and complex formation allowed to reach completion, preferably until a highly viscous mass is formed. The organic acid may be, for example, oxalic, citric or tartaric. Suitable metals whose complexes are formed are aluminium, beryllium, zirconium, hafnium, germanium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium and iron. To shorten the overall time of treatment the main quantities of organic acid may be neutralised by digesting with industrial oxide hydrates of the metal, or with salts of the metal with a volatile acid until the volatile acid has been considerably vaporised. The following compounds are novel: Aluminium oxalic acid complex H6[Al2(C2O4)6],3H2O; uranyl oxalic acid complex H4[UO2(C2O4) 3] ,3H2O; niobium-oxalic acid complex H5[Nb(C2O4)5],nH2O; tantalum-oxali acid complex H5[Ta(C2O4)5],nH2O; tantalum-oxalic acid complex H7[Ta(C2O4)6],nH2O; chromium-oxalic acid complex H6[Cr2(C2O4)6],nH2O; molybdenum-oxalic acid complex H2[Mo2 (C2O4)]n,H2O; tungsten-oxalic acid complex H2[W2(C2O4)],nH2O; beryllium-oxali acid complex H2[Be2(C2O4)3],nH2O; germaniumoxalic acid complex H2[Ge(C2O4)3],nH2O; and iron-oxalic acid complex H3[Fe(C2O4)3],nH2O. Specification 866,714 and 866,717 are referred to.
