Abstract

866,710. Securing turbine and compressor rotors on shafts. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. Aug. 30, 1957 [Sept. 6, 1956], No. 27264/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups XXV and XXVI] The turbine rotor 1 and the compressor rotor 2 of an elastic fluid turbine are connected by Hirth couplings 8, 10 to a hollow shaft 3, a tiebolt 6 screwed into a tapped hole 4 in the turbine rotor and having a lock-nut 18 at its far end holding the parts together. When connecting the parts, the tie bolt 6 is first screwed into the turbine rotor 1, and the hollow shaft 3 is then slipped over the tie bolt. Radially inwardly projecting teeth 14 at the end of the hollow shaft 3 slide between axial splines 13 on an enlarged portion of the tie bolt, and facial teeth 8 of the Hirth coupling at the end of the shaft then interdigitate with similar facial teeth 9 on the hub of the turbine rotor. The tie bolt 6 is thereby locked in the turbine rotor 1. The Hirth couplings comprise axial teeth 8, 9, Fig. 2, tapered radially inwardly and axially, the dimensions of the teeth being such that the tips of the teeth 8 are spaced from the roots of the teeth 9, and vice versa, when the couplings are assembled, to reduce transfer of heat between the parts.
