Abstract

A synthetic ester lubricant has the formula: <FORM:0866589/IV (b)/1> where R5, R7 and R8 are C1-4 acylic alkyl groups, n is 2 to 6, and A is either <FORM:0866589/IV (b)/2> where R1 and R3 are C1-3 acyclic alkyl groups, R2 is a C2-8 acylic alkyl group which may contain a single branch of not more than 2 carbon atoms, and R4 is a C1-10 acyclic alkyl group in which the carbon atom adjacent to the CH2 group is other than a quaternary carbon atom. They are prepared from the appropriate acid chloride and the sodium salt of the appropriate alcohol. The product may be purified by distillation, passing through alumina and/or passing through a basic ion exchange resin. Examples describe the preparation of di-n-octyl and di-2,2-dimethylamyl a a ,a 1,a 1-tetraethylazelates. Tetraethylazelaic acid is prepared as follows: triethylcarbinyl 2-ethylbutyrate is obtained from diethylacetyl chloride and sodium triethylmethoxide and reacted in the form of its sodio derivative with 1,5-dibromopentane to give di(triethylcarbinyl) tetraethyl-azelate which is hydrolysed to the free acid; it is converted to the acid chloride for use in esterification.
