Abstract
866,549. Sewing needles. HUNTER, T. D., and POMERANTZ, J. M. June 30, 1959 [July 14, 1958], No. 22494/58. Class 112 In a sewing needle having a thread-passing slot entering the needle eye and inclined towards the needle point, the inner end of the slot farthest from the needle point has hemispherical ends joined by a cylindrical portion. To determine the inclination of the slot a line BB <SP>1</SP> is drawn tangential to the curved forward end of the eye and through the intersection of the outer edge of the needle and a transverse line AA positioned at the middle of the slot. When line BB <SP>1</SP> is inclined at over 20 degrees to the needle axis, it corresponds to the outer wall of the slot. The inner wall of the slot is determined by a line CC <SP>1</SP> drawn parallel to line BB 1 through a print F at the intersection of the side of the eye and the line AA <SP>1</SP>. A circle drawn through the point F with its centre on line CC 1 and positioned inwardly from point F at a distance equal to half the thickness of the wall of the needle adjacent the eye, determines the position of the hemispherical ends and cylindrical portion terminating the inner wall of the slot. The rear end of the slot is formed by a line GG <SP>1</SP> drawn tangentially to said circle and the curved rear end of the eye. When line BB <SP>1</SP> is, as shown, inclined at less than 20 degrees, the outer wall of the slot is determined by an arc struck from the centre of said circle at a radius equal to the thickness of the needle wall adjacent the eye, said arc meeting the side of the eye at the point K.
