Abstract

865,998. Plate type heat exchangers. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. April 6, 1959 [April 18, 1958], No. 11546/59. Class 64(3) A housing enclosing a plate type heat exchanger in which the fluids are at high pressure, comprises end walls 32 and side walls 22 extending beyond the end walls, each end wall being reinforced by a pair of plates 36 in sliding abutment with the end wall and backed by a plurality of transverse beams 38 which preferably are welded to one or other of the reinforcing plates 36 in the manner shown, and at one of their ends to a side wall 22. This arrangement it is said provides an inherently flexible casing which permits the heat exchanger core to expand or contract under operating conditions. In a modification described (Fig. 2 not shown), each transverse beam comprises a pair of beam members in sliding abutment. In the form shown the heat exchanger comprises a series of hollow elements spaced apart by closure bars 18, each element comprising a pair of plates 14 spaced apart by parallel tubes 16 the side walls of which constitute longitudual fins extending transversely across the passageway for one of the heat exchanging fluids formed between the plates 14. A second fluid such as air flows between the elements from an inlet 24 to an outlet 26 formed in each of the side plates 22.
