Abstract

865,625. Hydraulic transmission of power. PAYNE, R. Feb. 20, 1959, No. 5932/59. Addition to 832,776. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] An hydraulic transmission comprises a pump and motor having bladed rotors 87 which intermesh with recesses 89 in rotary baffles 90, the pump and/or motor being provided with by-pass means 204 to pass fluid from the leading side 210 of the blades to the opposite side 209 as the blades pass through the recesses in the baffle. The pump is partitioned into a plurality of sections each consisting of a rotor having blades 88 which are of gear-tooth shape to provide a close fit with the recesses 89 during the passage of the blades. As a blade enters the recess of a baffle, which is driven from the rotor by gearing 200, 201, fluid displaced from the leading side 210 of the blade passes through the by-pass passage 204 and a duct 206 to a passage between the housing 202 for the baffle and an inner part 203 of the casing 80. As the blade leaves the recess, fluid passes through a duct 205 and the passage 204 to the rear side 209 of the blade. The arrangement provides a leak-proof seal between the low and high-pressure chambers 101, 102, while permitting the baffle to spin freely. A chamber 103 formed between the minor part 203 and casing 80 provides a by-pass chamber between the chambers 101, 102 and is controlled by valves 98, 99, the former being operated by a cam 106. The various sections of the pump may thus be made operative for a particular gear ratio to be selected as is described in the parent Specification. The motor may be provided with a by-pass valve to enable it to be run free of the pump. A seal 217, Fig. 6, consisting of a ring of square or other section, may be provided in a groove in the rotor and be spring-urged against the wall of the rotor housing. The temperature of the fluid in the transmission may be controlled by maintaining a predetermined pressure in the return line of the system by an adjustable, spring- loaded relief valve disposed between the supply tank and a radiator, a small pump or reducing valve maintaining the supply at this pressure. A governor and pressure-operated valves may be employed to control the system automatically.
