A gas turbine engine having multi-stage axial flow compressor means has at least one bearing which is surrounded by a hollow jacket, means being provided for supplying water to the interior of the jacket. The invention is described with reference to a gas turbine jet engine of the by-pass type comprising a low pressure compressor 11, a high pressure compressor 12, combustion equipment 13 and high and low pressure turbines 14, 15, the low pressure compressor 11 and low pressure turbine 15 being mounted on a shaft 16 which is supported in a bearing 17 disposed between the low pressure and high pressure compressors. The bearing 17 is carried by and is surrounded by a hollow jacket 20, the jacket being supported from the engine casing 10 by means of a hollow vane 22 and a radially-extending wall 21. Water is supplied to the hollow jacket 20 from a tank 32 by means of a pump 33 and duct 31, any steam forming in the jacket discharging through the relief valve 34. An oil drainage pipe 35 extends through the duct 31. A shaft 25 by which engine auxiliaries such as a tachometer are driven, is driven from the shaft 16 by means of bevel gearing 23, 24, the shaft 25 being supported by a bearing 26 which is carried by and surrounded by the jacket 20.
