Abstract
865,624. Cigarette or cigarillo filter plugs. KÍRBER, K. Oct. 25, 1957 [Jan. 2, 1957], No. 33427/57. Class 130. Sextuple-length filter plugs 12a, Figs. 3 arid 4, fed by a placer roll 3 into every third groove of a rotary drum F are severed into doublelength plugs by a rotary double knife 10, the centre plug 2b being transferred to a further drum U directly and the flanking plugs 2c, 2a after respectively one and two further rotations of the drum F by which time fixed guides 8, 9 have positioned them centrally of their grooves. In this embodiment the drum F has a total number of grooves not divisible by three, and the knife 10 is swung by a cam (not shown) about a pivot 11 to clear grooves containing severed plugs. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the drum F has a total number of grooves divisible by three and there is a non-swinging knife, the plugs 2a, 2c being transferred to an auxiliary drum and returned to appropriate empty grooves of the drum F after positioning, being finally transferred to a further drum to lie between cigarettes thereon. A stationary spring blade retains the plugs in the auxiliary drum immediately prior to their return to the drum F. Modifications.-Fig. 5 shows diagrammatically a drum having each plug-receiving groove 16 divided into three sections, each containing one of the plugs 2a, 2b, 2c into which the sextuple-length plug supplied at A is cut by knives 34, and the flanking ones 18, 19 of which are mounted on bell-crank levers 20, 21 and are respectively retarded and accelerated by cams 28, 29 to align with intermediate grooves 30, 31 to which the plugs 2a, 2c are transferred by guides (not shown). In a variation, shown diagrammatically in developed form in Fig. 14, plug-filled sections 35 ... 37 of plug-receiving drum grooves pivot about radial axes, as do intermediate grooves 40, to which a guide 41 then transfers the plugs 2b, 2c, the latter via guides 42, the members 35 ... 37 and 40 then returning to their original orientations.
