Abstract
865,538. Retractive switches. BONNELLA & SON Ltd., D. H. Aug. 28, 1958 [Aug. 28, 1957], No. 27146/57. Class 38 (5). A switch arranged to be mounted in a vehicle gear lever has a ring-shaped contact surrounding a second contact, one of the contacts being fixed and the other movable laterally in any direction relative thereto to close the contacts against the action of a centralising coil spring. In one form, Fig. 1, the ring contact 12 is carried by a fixed metal sleeve 6 and co-operates with a contact 14 carried by the movable part 16 of the gear lever. The contact 14 is fixed to a rod 32 passing through a plate 28 mounted in a cap 18 of the part 16, a spring 38 being arranged between the plate 28 and a shoulder 40 on the rod 32. The part 16 has an annular shoulder 22 located in a recess 24 of the sleeve 6. A spring 30 normally holds the part 16 and sleeve 6 and thus the contacts 12, 14, separated, but tilting movement of the part 16 in any direction closes contacts 12, 14, further movement of the part 16 after the contacts have closed being made possible by the resilient mounting of contact 14. In a modification, Fig. 2, the contact 14 can be moved axially into engagement with the base of the contact 12 against the action of a light spring 44. Transverse movements are opposed by a stronger spring 30 which bears at one end on a slide 46 on the sleeve 6, which slide is axially movable to prevent spring 30 from opposing axial movements of contact 14.
