Class 97(1) A wide-aperture objective consists of a positive front meniscus convex to the front, a negative meniscus convex to the front, a positive element and a negative element, the latter being separated by a stop from a negative element which is concave to the front and is followed by a rear positive element. In this objective, the front surface of the first negative meniscus and the rear surface of the second negative meniscus have refractive powers which lie between 1À4 and 3À2 times the power # of the complete objective and the numerical value of the sum of the surface power sums of these two menisci is between-1-15 # and 2À30#. Preferably, the sum of the surface powers of the positive meniscus is between 0À4# and 0À9#. The numerical value of the sum of the surface powers of the first negative meniscus may be between 0À65# and 1À3#, while that of the second negative meniscus is preferably between 0À5# and (p. It is preferred that the numerical value of the sum of the surface power sums of the two elements to the rear of the stop shall be between 0À65 and 1À3#. Also, the surface power sum of the rear element is preferably between 1À15# and 2À30#. Optical data are given for examples of an objective as shown.
