864,478. Plying strands. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORPORATION May 17, 1957 [May 23, 1956], No. 40448/60. Divided out of 864,477. Class 120(2). The description is the same as that of Specification 864,477 but the claims are directed to apparatus for plying two or more strands in which tension controls are applied to two strands, each control having a characteristic which is a function of the plying-rate and being " dynamic " in the sense that it actually controls the tension as opposed to increasing it by the addition of a constant amount or by the application of a constant multiplier. The first control comprises a step at 17 around which strand A from package 11, after being initially tensioned at 13 is wrapped to varying extent according to variations in input tension after leaving a hollow rotated spindle 15 via a radial aperture 17. The strand balloons around a stationary inner package 21 and passes around a capstan 70a on a head 60. The second control comprises a cap 26 around which a second strand B is wrapped to varying extent after being initially tensioned at 23 and before passing to a second capstan 70b on the head 60. The head is rotated by the ballooning strand, and the cap by the pull of the strand B, the cap being subjected to a brake in ways described in Specification 864,477.
