Class 143 [Also in Group XXX] A check weigher, of the kind in which articles to be check weighed are carried by an endless belt having a horizontal run which traverses a horizontal weighing platform, has the endless belt driven by a hollow drum whose outer surface contacts the inner surface of the belt with a plurality of openings connecting the interior of the drum with its outer surface and a member contacting the inner surface of the drum and overlying at least a portion of each opening in the arc of the drum contacting the belt, which member is connected to a vacuum source whereby the belt is held against the drum. The belt 21, made of nylon or the like, traverses the weighing platform 19, guide shoes 22 and 23, an idler roller 24 mounted on a pivoted arm 26 to allow the belt to slacken for accurate weighing, and the driving drum 25. The latter (see Fig. 4) is formed with a plurality of transverse grooves 44 spaced apart around the drum's outer surface. A hole 45 connects each groove 44 to the drum interior where a suction head 36 covers those holes 45 whose slots 44 are covered by the belt. The suction head comprises a tube 41, connected by a flexible pipe 42 to a vacuum pump, on which tube the drum contacting shoe is rotatably mounted. The shoe 38 has a nylon surface bearing on the drum interior which it contacts over an arc co-extensive with the arc of contact of the belt with the outer surface of the drum. An aperture 40 in the shoe connects with the bore of the tube 41 which tube is supported from the fixed frame of the apparatus by arms 50 rotatably mounted on a fixed rod 51. Sorting by weighing. Packages on the belt 21 are weighed on the platform 19 and passed to a conveyer 16 on which they are automatically sorted into under, over and correct weight categories by means actuated by weight signals transmitted from the weighing mechanism 12.
