863,868. Optical gauging apparatus. VICKERS AIRCRAFT HOLDINGS Ltd. Nov. 17, 1958 [Dec. 11, 1957], No. 38506/57. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for indicating the disparity between the surface of a workpiece G and a generator line EF to conform with which the surface is to be reduced, comprises optical means A, B which project light beams upon the workpiece to form two linear images which will coincide in the generator line EF and a differentially illuminated area a, b is produced which must be removed from the workpiece to reduce it to the generator line EF. Knife edge stops C, D, which may be alternately serrated, intersect the light beams from projectors A, B to form the shaded areas a, b. In a modification, Fig. 2, light from a source P is reflected by a concave mirror Q and then by plane mirrors R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP>. Beams are projected vertically and horizontally on to a model aeroplane wing W and the shaded areas x, y denote the amount of material to be removed. The workpiece may be supported on a table with means for adjusting its position by both rotation and transition. The apparatus may be used to check the alignment of a workpiece on a machine bed. The removal of elements from the surface may be controlled by recorded observation or by an automatic relay system actuated by signals emitted from a photo-electric cell trained on the shaded areas.
