Abstract

1412991 Template followers ROLLS ROYCE (1971) Ltd 17 July 1973 [29 July 1972] 35604/72 Heading G1A In a photo-electric system for comparing a workpiece 11 with a master-template 32, the detector (and light source) are mechanically linked to a feeler 17, or a cutting tool, to move in correspondence as it moves over the workpiece. The template is fixed relative to the workpiece and comprises the outline between the transparent and opaque parts of a plate. An image of the template is formed on the 4- quadrant photo-electric cell of the sensor 34, by a lens mounted in a swinging arm 35. The arm is servodriven to automatically centre the image on the sensor, and its position measured by a "pickoff" 40 to indicate the disparity between the workpiece and the template. These servo drive arrangements and the circuit are illustrated in a little more detail in Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The system applied to a lathe tool cutting a workpiece relative to a template is illustrated schematically in Fig. 4 (not shown).
