Abstract

A method for producing an algine-carbon sorbent comprises intimately mixing a water soluble alginate with carbon powder to give an alginate-carbon mixture which is then coagulated, to form a substantially solid mass, by an aqueous solution of an acid or a metal salt of an acid. The water soluble alginate is usually sodium alginate, the acids employed may be sulphuric, hydrochloric, acetic or succinic acids; or aluminium sulphate, calcium chloride or zinc chloride may be employed as the metal salts of an acid. The carbon powder may be vegetable charcoal, bone charcoal or active carbon.
