[Also in Group XXIII] A magnetic work-holder comprises a stationary jaw 8, Fig. 1, constituted by or engaged with one of the pole-pieces of a permanent or electromagnet 40 and a movable jaw 13 which is in sliding contact with the other pole-piece and is movable towards and away from the stationary jaw, whereby a workpiece 7 can bo clamped between the opposed faces of the two jaws. The pole-pieces are separated by a layer 12 of non-magnetic material and are energized either by a magnet 40 having its poles axially arranged and movable axially between workholding and work-releasing positions by a screw 42a and handle 43, or by a magnet 41, Fig. 2, having its poles diametrically opposed and rotatable between work-holding and workreleasing positions. When the stationary jaw consists of a separate part 26, it is aligned with its associated pole-piece by means of a groove 29. Recesses may be provided in the opposed faces of the jaws so that a workpiece, such as a knife blade, can be clamped at selected parts. The sliding jaw may be formed with a V-groove on one face at right angles to a similar groove on its opposite face to enable the jaw to be reversed to hold a workpiece in either of two directions. In another embodiment, the jaw consists of a plurality of members 45, Fig. 5, individually adjustable in a casing 46. In a further embodiment, the jaws are recessed so that one 51 slidably engages the main part 48, Fig. 6, of the horizontal plate of a magnetic work-holder while the other is recessed so that it engages only the pole-pieces 49, which are separated from the main plate by non-magnetic material 50, and is secured against movement at least in the direction of movement of the sliding jaw.
