Abstract

863,003. Boiler furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. June 25, 1959 [June 26, 1958], No. 20519/58. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XIII] Wall panels for a tubulous boiler furnace comprise tube lengths united to metal casing panels over substantially their whole length, arranged so that the direction of flow and inlet fluid temperature are the same in the tubes united to each panel and spaced apart to accommodate intermediate tubes between some of the casing united tubes. Tubes 9A, Fig. 4, are welded on either side of metal strips 23 over the length of a casing panel, and casing panels 24 are welded to either side of the outer edge of the strip 23. Adjacent panels 24 are butt-welded together. In the upper part of the furnace, the space between adjacent pairs of tubes 9, Fig. 5, welded to strips 23 is filled by vapour heating tubes 11 held to the casing so as to allow vertical movement. The space between adjacent pairs of casing united tubes 9 below the superheater panels is filled by sinuous continuations of the tubes 9. The sinuous part of the vapour generating tubes may be interleaved, or may have fins so that the space is completely filled. Casing united tubes of large diameter, with the gaps between them at their upper ends filled by superheater tubes, are bifurcated below the superheated header to form sinuous tube panels. Pairs of tubes may be welded to strips welded between casing panels, and the intervening tube lengths held in place by brackets welded to the tubes and engaging lugs welded to the casing, groups of intermediate tubes may be welded to bars engaging behind the casing united tubes, or the intermediate tubes may be held in place by rods 183 welded to the casing united tubes, Fig. 18, and rods 185, 187 welded to some of the intermediate tubes. Single tubes 150, Fig. 15, welded directly to the casing panels 153 have fins 154, 155, lugs 159 on the fins engaging the fins of intermediate tubes 156 to hold the tubes in place. Casing united tubes of large diameter may have fins engaging bars welded to the intermediate tubes so that the inner surfaces of all the tubes lie in the same plane. In Fig. 13, vapour generating tubes 150 only are used to cover the furnace wall, alternate ones being welded to the casing and fins 154, 155, 157, 158 being provided on the tubes.
