Abstract

862,473. Ventilating vehicles. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd., J. Sept. 17, 1959 [June 20, 1958], No. 19837/58. Class 137 A ventilating system for railcars comprises an air-cooling unit 5 which distributes cold air through a duct 10 extending along the roof and having outlets 11 into the vehicle interior 1, an air-heating unit 16 which distributes hot air at floor level, one or more outlets 22, 23 through which some of the used air is forced out of the vehicle, a common outlet 26 through which air is drawn from the vehicle for re-treatment and re-circulation after mixing with a quantity of air substantially equal to the used air forced out, and thermostats 28 for the heating and cooling units disposed in the path of the re-circulated air adjacent to the common outlet. 26. External air is drawn through filters 7, into a space formed by the ceiling 4 and roof 9 and containing the cooling unit 5. A vertical duct 14 extends between the cooling unit and the heating unit and the outlet 26 from the compartment 1 leads into the upper end of this duct. The heated air is carried by ducts 18, 20 extending along the skirting of the compartment 1. The thermostats 28 control either or both units depending on the air-temperature required.
