Abstract

In an air conditioning system for railway vehicles in. which cooling air is supplied to the compartment and which is adequate to cool a full compartment, the cooling capacity is reduced dependent upon the temperature in the compartment when there are fewer passengers. The cooling is reduced by regulating the heat supply over at least part of the range and by regulating the basic amount of cooling air supplied over at least part of the range. It is preferred to reduce the cooling air and to increase the warm air simultaneously but these changes could take place in sequence. This method ensures that the basic air supplied per person is maintained constant. Apparatus conditioning the air comprises an intake 4 for fresh air, an intake 5 for recirculated air, a filter 7, cooling coils 9, 10, and heating coils 11, 12. A blower 1 delivers the air to a channel 22 and to a second channel 23 channel 22 controlled by a device 44 on the vehicle roof and sensitive to weather conditions supplies the basic amount of cooling air, channel 23 includes a heater 24 controlled by heating and cooling thermostats 25, 26 and supplying warm air at 80 or 50 C., respectively. A safety thermostat 27 is provided and operates if a predetermined temperature is exceeded. A mixture of air from ducts 22, 23 is admitted to the compartment via outlets 33 situated under a window and controlled by a perforated slide. The slide is connected to a rotating slide valve 35 in the duct 23 so that as one valve is opened the other is closed, and vice versa. Further openings 39 from the duct 22 are provided beneath the seats. Air from the compartment is drawn into a housing 28 above the outlets 33 and below the outlets 30. A valve 41 admits air to a corridor heater 40 and a further valve 43 supplies air to a washing space or store room. The cooling system comprises two coils 9, 10 selectively controlled by magnetic valves 18 and having a valve 17 by which both coils can be switched off. A thermostat 19 controls the temperature in the cooling portion of the air conditioning unit 8. The system also includes the usual motor 14, compressor 13, condenser 15 with fan, and a collecting flask 16 for the cold medium.
