862,037. Making cans; seaming; bending. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Nov. 9, 1959 [Jan. 21, 1959], No. 2320/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Apparatus for making a cam body consists of shaping devices 4, 5 operable to form a body blank having opposed hooked flanged edges about a mandrel 1 arranged to be expanded to interlock the hooked flanges and contracted immediately the hooked flanges are flattened by a hammer 8 against the mandrel 1 and a clamp 9 extending lengthwise of and movable relative to the mandrel 1 in such manner that the blank is lightly pressed against the mandrel 1 while being moved to the forming position, is clamped firmly against the mandrel 1 during forming until the hooked flanges are flattened by the hammer 8 and is released while the flattened hooked flanges are gripped between the mandrel 1 and the hammer 8. The clamp consists of articulated clamping elements 9, 9a carried by supporting members 10 having projections which engage with lost motion in inclined slots in actuating members 14. The light clamping pressure is derived from spring-loaded plungers 35. The heavy clamping pressure is derived from springs 16 acting on the actuating members 14 when a rod 13 is moved to one end position, and the clamping elements 9, 9a are lifted when the rod 13 is moved to the other end position, the actuating members 14 being moved by projections 17 on the rod 13. The rod 13 is moved to any of its three positions by linkage 21 operated by a cam 27. In a modification the right-hand actuating member 14 is fixed to the rod 13. It may be arranged that a plurality of blanks are formed on the mandrel 1 at the same time.
