Abstract

862,021. Feeding and delivering sheets. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Feb. 6, 1958 [Feb. 6, 1957], No. 4149/57. Class 100(1) Feeding sheets:-Sheet-separating apparatus comprises an endless belt 1, Fig. 1, for supporting a stack of sheets 4 on edge, two side plates 2, a front plate 3 which is apertured to receive a friction separating roller 6, pairs of upper snatch rollers 9, and two friction rollers 10 which engage the edges of the batch of sheets immediately behind the front plate 3. The belt is continuously driven, to urge the stack towards the plate 3, through a constant torque friction drive unit 14, and the rollers 10 are driven through gearing 13 in the direction of the arrows 12 at a peripheral speed equal to that of the belt 1. A back plate 15 rests on the belt 1. In operation, a rubber &c.strip 7 on the roller 6 feeds the first sheet 4 upwardly into the bite of the rollers 9, which feed the sheet upwardly to further apparatus for cancelling or sorting the sheets. The rollers 10 have foam rubber covers 11, and restrain the upward movement of sheets other than the first sheet. In a modification, the belt 1 is replaced by a flat plate continuously moving in the direction of the front plate 3 and frictionally engaging the side rollers 10 to drive them. Sheet delivery:-According to the Provisional Specification, after the separated sheets 4 have been sorted and cancelled they are fed to two pairs of feed rollers 16, Fig. 2, then over a sloping plate 17 which is curved at the lower end, the sheets being gripped centrally by feed rollers 20. The sheets leaving the plate 17 pass beneath a second curved plate 21, and are delivered by rollers 22 on to a curved plate 23. The sheets, in curved condition, are then fed by rollers 25 to a stacking box 24 provided with a rotating star-wheel 27. The rollers 22, 25, and further rollers such as 26, are driven at a slower rate than the rollers 20 to cause the sheets 4 to be overlapped on the plate 23.
