Abstract

New monohydric alcohol terminated polyesters, useful in synthetic lubricant blends (see Specification 861,964) are the reaction products of (1) one or more dicarboxylic acids of formula HOOC-R1-COOH, where R1 is an alkylene group of 4-14 carbon atoms, or anhydrides thereof; (2) one or more diols of formula <FORM:0861962/IV (a)/1> where x is 0 or an integer, y is an integer, x+y does not exceed 5, R6 is a methyl or ethyl group and R7 is an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms (see Specification 861,961), and (3) one or more monohydric alcohols of formula ROH, where R is an alkyl group of 4-18 carbon atoms. Specified dicarboxylic acids are sebacic, adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic and brassylic acids. Specified monohydric alcohol are 2-ethylhexyl-, 2-ethylbutyl-, cetyl-, neopentyl-, trimethyl-hexyl- and trimethylnonyl alcohol. In an example a polyester is made by reacting a mixture of (1) 0.5 mol. sebacic acid, (2) 0.5 mol. of the reaction product of 4 mols. of neopentyl glycol and 7 mols. of ethylene oxide and (3) 0.05 mol. of 2-ethylhexyl alcohol. Specification 824,249 also is referred to.ALSO:New polyesters, useful in synthetic lubricant blends (see Specification 861,964), have the formula ROOCR1COO(R2OOCR1COO)nR where n is an integer, the R's are alkyl groups of 4-18 carbon atoms, the R1's are alkylene groups of 4-14 carbon atoms and the R2's are oxygenated hydrocarbon radicals of the formula <FORM:0861962/IV (b)/1> where x is 0 or an integer, y is an integer, x+y does not exceed 5, R6 is a methyl or ethyl group and R7 is an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms. The polyesters are made by reacting in one or more stages (1) one or more dicarboxylic acids of formula HOOCR1COOH or anhydrides thereof (e.g. sebacic, adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic or brassylic acid); (2) one or more diols of formula <FORM:0861962/IV (b)/2> (see Specification 861,961), especially wherein x+y=1-2; and (3) one or more monohydric alcohols of formula ROH (e.g. 2-ethyl hexyl-, 2-ethylbutyl-, cetyl-, neopentyl-, trimethylhexyl- or trimethylnonyl alcohol). In an example a polyester is made by reacting a mixture of (1) 0.5 mol. of sebacic acid, (2) 0.5 mol. of the reaction product of 4 mols. of neopentyl glycol and 7 mols. of ethylene oxide and (3) 0.05 mol. of 2-ethyl hexyl alcohol. Specification 824,249 also is referred to.
