Abstract

The invention comprises liquid polyesters of the general formula HO(R2OOCR1COO)nR2OH, wherein n is an integer, R2 represents an oxygenated hydrocarbon radical of the formula <FORM:0861963/IV (a)/1> wherein x=0 or an integer, y is an integer, x+y does not exceed 5, R6 is a methyl or ethyl group and R7 is a C1-4 alkyl group and R1 represents a C4-14 alkylene group. There may be different R1, R6 and R7 groups present and x and y may have different values in the single molecule. The esters may be prepared by reacting in one or more stages, an acid or acids HOOCR2COOH with a diol or diols of the formula <FORM:0861963/IV (a)/2> the molar proportion of diol being greater than, but preferably not more than twice, the molar proportion of acid. The esters may be used in lubricants as described in Specification 861,965, or as plasticizers. Examples describe the preparation of polyester from sebacic acid or a mixture of sebacic, 2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl adipic and 2 : 4 : 4-trimethyl adipic acids and diols of the above general formula wherein R6 and R7 represent methyl and x+y averages 1.7 or x is zero and y 1, by heating the reactants together at 130 DEG rising to 240 DEG C. while passing N2 therethrough and replacing distilled diol and finally heating at 240 DEG C. under reduced pressure. Adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic and brassylic acids are also specified reagents. The first Provisional Specification describes polyesters of the formula HO(R2OOCR1COO)nR2OH, wherein n is an integer, R1 is the residue of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and R2 is the residue of a diol HOR2OH formed by reacting ethylene oxide with neopentyl glycol. Succinic and glutaric acids are additionally specified reactants. Specifications 763,077 and 861,961 also are referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises liquid polyesters having the general formula HO(R2OOCR1COO)nR2OH wherein n is an integer, the R2s represent oxygenated hydrocarbon radicals of the formula <FORM:0861963/IV (b)/1> wherein x=O or an integer, y=an integer, x + y does not exceed 5, R6 is a methyl or ethyl group and R7 is a C1-4 alkyl group and R1 represents a C4-14 alkylene group. There may be different R1, R6 and R7 groups present and x and y may have different values in any given ester molecule; the esters may be in the form of a mixture of different esters. The esters may be prepared by reacting, in one or more stages, an acid or acids of the formula HOOCR1COOH and a diol or diols of the formula <FORM:0861963/IV (b)/2> the molar proportion of diol(s) being greater than but preferably not more than twice, the molar proportion of acid(s). The esters, especially those having a viscosity at 25 DEG C. of 50-20,000, may be used in lubricants as described in Specification 861,965 or as plasticizers. Examples describe the preparation of polyesters from sebacic acid or a mixture of sebacic, 2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl adipic and 2 : 4 : 4-trimethyl adipic acids and diols of the above general formula, wherein R6=R7=CH3 and x+y have an average value of 1.7 or x=O and y=1, by heating the reagents together at a temperature rising slowly from 130 DEG C. to 240 DEG C. while passing a stream of nitrogen therethrough, replacing distilled diol and finally heating at 240 DEG C. under reduced pressure. Adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic and brassylic acids are also specified as reagents. The first Provisional Specification describes polyesters of the general formula HO(R2OOCR1COO)nR2OH wherein n is an integer, R1 is the residue of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and R2 is the residue of a diol HOR2OH formed by reacting ethylene oxide with neopentyl glycol. Glutaric and succinic acids are mentioned as additional examples of dicarboxylic acids. Specifications 763,077 and 861,961 also are referred to.
