An ironing press comprises a pair of parallel heated pressing plates 13, 21 and an inflatable envelope 10 of resilient material, e.g. rubber, which is adapted to the shape of the article to be pressed and contains support members 12 so that the envelope may be inserted in a deflated or partly inflated state into the article 1, an inner tube 11 supplying the medium for expanding the envelope which can be inserted between the pressing plates. The supporting member 12 pivots along the tube 11 and compressed air is supplied to 11 via cylinder 15 and a reversible control valve 17. The pressing plates 13, 21 are connected via levers 24 and pivots 25 to two oppositely acting pneumatically-operated pistons 27, 27<SP>1</SP> which actuate the movement of the pressing plates. Adjustable stops 34 lock the levers in the pressing position and adjustable stop screws 35 limit the stroke of the pistons. The tube 11 acts as a stand for the envelope and the apparatus may be arranged horizontally or vertically. For continuous operation a number of inflatable envelopes may be arranged on a common carriage or a rotary turntable so that several envelopes are loaded ready for pressing. For producing a high-pressing finish a solid or highly resilient cushion may be fitted inside the envelope, the cushion thickness corresponding to the opening between the pressing plates. In a further embodiment the article to be pressed is fitted over a partly inflated envelope which is then fully inflated after insertion between the pressing plates which remain stationary.
