1436419 Making buttons ASTOR-WERK OTTO BERNING & CO 14 Aug 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 38464/73 Heading A3H [Also in Division B3] A machine for making articles such as buttons comprises an upper tool 5, a lower tool 7, having an outer spring loaded holding frame 13 and a movable inner core part 21 and an air nozzle 35 for producing a transverse air stream to remove a manufactured article from the lower tool 7. In the manufacture of a cloth covered button, a pair of upper tools 5 is lowered by a ram 2 to enable one of the tools 5 to pick up a front portion of a button and button covering material 'from a lower tool (6), (Fig. 3, not shown). After turning the tools 5 through 180‹, the tool 5 carrying the button components engages the lower tool 7, upon the subsequent stroke of the ram 2, to press its holding frame 13 against a bracket 11 and to cause assembly of the button components with a button back plate, previously positioned on the lower tool 7, to produce a button 18. When the upper tool 5 is raised, the 'holding frame 13 of the lower tool 7 is raised by a spring 15 until it contacts a table 10 and a piston rod 32 of a pneumatic cylinder 33 is extended to pivot levers 30 which lift a sleeve 22 supporting the core part 21 of the lower tool 7. Simultaneously, compressed air is supplied to the nozzle 35 to remove the button 18 from its raised position into a container. When the compressed air supply is discontinued, the sleeve 22 and core part 21 are lowered by springs 45. If the back plate of the button is provided with a long shank instead of an eye 8', the core part 21 may be. raised by a hand lever (43) (Fig. 5, not shown) and the button 18 manually removed.
