Abstract

Oxygenated organic compounds and products comprising such compounds are produced by partially oxidizing an organic compound having at least one carbon to carbon linkage in vapour phase at temperatures of 300 DEG to 900 DEG F. and pressures of from 0-300 p.s.i.g. in the absence of a catalyst, with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of from 0.05 to 8 volume per cent ozone based on oxygen. The oxygen may range from 0.05 to 2 mols. of 02 per mol. of feed, and may be employed as pure oxygen, air or diluted with nitrogen. The feedstocks include aliphatic, or cycloaliphatic saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons, olefinic and cyclo-olefinic compounds, or acetylenes and may contain various radicals having little effect on the reactivity of the compound, e.g. carboxy, hydroxy, keto, nitrile, nitroso, halogen and inorganic radicals such as sulphate, sulphonate, phosphonate and phosphate. The major products of the partial oxidation are cyclic ethers, but with certain feedstocks olefines are produced, e.g. styrene from ethylbenzene, and small amounts of carbonyls and ketones are also formed. Examples describe the partial oxidation of n-hexane, n-hexene-1 and chloropentane.
