Abstract

861,232. Knitting. ETABLISSEMENTS GARNIER-LUNEAU. March 24, 1958 [April 30, 1957], No. 9365/58. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group VII] Men's pants are knitted on a straight-bar machine by knitting the front portion in two parts 2, 3 commencing at the waist and knitting the part 2 first, one edge 6 of which is straight and the other, 5, of which is fashioned to make the front of the leg opening. On completion of the part 2, the last row of loops is retained on the needles at a low inactive level below the knocking-over bits, Fig. 7. The second part 3 is then commenced from the waist, a portion of which will overlap the part 2, this portion including a straight edge 8. The other edge 7 is fashioned to provide the front of the other leg opening. When the part 3 has been completed the last row of loops of the part 2 is raised to an operative level and knitting of the rear panel 4 is commenced, the first course of loops of the rear panel being drawn through the loops of both the parts 2 and 3 of the front portion so that the two front parts and the rear panel are integrally knitted together along a course at the crutch of the garment, Fig. 9. The rear panel is knitted in one piece and is suitably fashioned at each edge to complete the leg openings. The upper outer edges of the rear panel and front parts are sewn together and an elastic belt is secured at the waist. The leg openings are reinforced by a strip of braid. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 11, the front portion is knitted in three parts commencing with a central rectangular part 17 which is retained on the needles whilst two side parts 18, 19 are knitted simultaneously. The rear panel 20 is finally knitted on to the three front parts at the crutch in a similar manner to the previous arrangement.
