Abstract

860,781. Vehicles supported by gaseous cushions. LATIMER-NEEDHAM, C. H. June 12, 1959 [June 16, 1958], No. 19124/58. Class 4. The vehicle comprises a platform 1 formed with a rigid peripheral skirt, 2 preferably formed with a flexible extension. The skirt may be braced by flexible stays 10, 11. The platform carries an engine 3 driving an air pump 4 which draws air through a forwardly facing intake 5 and exhausts through ducts 6 which terminate in peripherally spaced nozzles 7. When the machine is provided with an extended skirt the ducts 6 may have flexible extensions 9 formed with nozzles 8. Air delivered to the cavity beneath the platform forms a cushion which raises and supports the vehicle above the surface of ground or water, translational movement being provided by an air propeller or jet (not shown) or by escape of the cushion air in an appropriate radial direction. The vehicle may be provided with a plurality of such lifting units.
