Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula R-CO-S-CH(R1)-CO-NHR2, where R represents a lower alkyl or carboxyalkyl residue, and R1 and R2 each represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl residue, "lower alkyl" meaning an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Examples describe the preparation of S - acetyl mercaptoacetamide, S - acetyl - N - methyl-mercaptoacetamide, S-acetyl-mercaptopropionamide and S - succinyl - mercaptoacetamide by reacting the appropriate mercaptoalkylamide with the appropriate acid anhydride or with acetyl chloride. The novel compounds are useful in processes for the permanent waving of hair (see Group IV (c)).ALSO:A composition suitable for application to hair as a step in the permanent waving thereof comprises, in aqueous solution, a compound of the general formula: R-CO-S-CH(R1)-CO-NHR2, where R represents a lower alkyl or carboxyalkyl residue and R1 and R2 each represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl residue, "lower alkyl" meaning an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and a basic substance, such as ammonia or an ethanolamine, e.g. triethanolamine. A process for the so-called permanent waving of hair comprises impregnating the hair, before or after constraining it into a desired configuration, with an aqueous solution of a mercapto compound of the above formula, and thereafter setting the hair in the desired configuration by a method known per se. In one embodiment, the hair is impregnated with a non-alkaline aqueous solution of the mercapto compound, constrained into a desired configuration, impregnated with an aqueous alkaline solution and set in the desired configuration.
