Abstract
860,571. Pipe joints. STEVENS, P. J. Nov. 16, 1959 [Aug. 15, 1958], No. 26337/58. Class 99(1). In a coupling for polyethylene pipes 1, 2, a rigid tubular insert 3 provided with serrations 4 is inserted in the pipe 2 to expand the end thereof and the expanded pipe end is secured in a socket 5 at the end of the pipe 1 by a synthetic plastic nut 6 provided with tapered screw threads 7 for co-operation with external threads on the end of the pipe 1 so as to compress the latter on the expanded end of the pipe 2. The nut 6 is formed with a recess 8 which accommodates a sleeve 10 provided at one end with a portion 11 of reduced diameter for location in an aperture 9 in the end wall of the nut, the other end of the sleeve engaging the expanded end of the pipe 2 to form a fluid-tight seal therewith when the nut is screwed on to the pipe 1. A ring may be fitted around the expanded portion of the pipe 2.
