[Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXIX] A method of detecting when a moving member reaches a given point involves the use of a ferromagnetic core with a winding, the inductance of which is caused to vary by its juxtaposition with an armature at the given point, the variation of inductance being detected and used to operate a bi-stable circuit. As shown in Fig. 1, two armatures 12, attached to a door which it is necessary should be shut before coal loading is started automatically, are situated adjacent the ends of U-shaped cores 13 when the door is shut and consequently alter the impedance of windings 14 in an A.C. bridge. When the door is open the bridge is balanced with limbs 14, 15, resonant at the supply frequency. When the door is shut the bridge is thrown out of balance and provides an output over rectifier 33, 34 to the input winding 29 of an auto-self-excited transductor 21 having bias windings 25 and positive feed-back on winding 28. The transductor is bi-stable so that once triggered over winding 29 it delivers D.C. to a load 11 which initiates coal loading. If two doors are involved in the system each door may have its own bridge circuit, the outputs of which are applied to an AND or an OR gate to trigger a bi-stable transductor so that loading takes place only when either door is shut or only when both are shut or open. To this end the bridge outputs may be used to inhibit a bias which is normally applied to the transductor. The invention is said to be applicable to the landing stage control of lift gear.
