859,411. Magnetic amplifiers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 15, 1957 [Aug. 24, 1956], No. 25980/56. Class 40 (9). The input to a single core resetting half-wave magnetic amplifier is made over a normallyenergized winding cwl, the effect of which can be cancelled to produce load current by switching in an oppositely-connected winding cw2. The amplifier may be given feed-back so as to lock itself in a condition to energize the load L, as shown in Fig. 3. Normally input winding cw1 is energized and load L receives no current. When switch S2 is made winding cw2 cancels the effect of cw1 and load L takes current. A second stage half-wave magnetic amplifier receives input from a shunt across the load and provides feed-back from a potentiometer P2 to block winding cw1. Button S2 may therefore be released and output will continue. To reset the amplifier a switch S3 is closed to bridge the excitation rectifier in the load circuit. In place of a second-stage magnetic amplifier a transistor gate may be used in circuit with winding cw1 so that the transistor is cut off when output appears across the load ; see Fig. 4, not shown. In Fig. 5, the switch S2 is shown constituted by a transistor T2. On the application of an input signal the transistor conducts to connect up the cancellation winding cw2 for a period determined by the difference in time constants between delay circuits P4, CP2, and P5, CP3.
