In a marking device comprising a reservoir 10, a nib-holder 22 having in communication therewith an absorbent carrier 30 substantially saturated with a marking fluid and located in the reservoir 10, a nib 28 carried by the nib holder and extending outwards therefrom for marking purposes and inwards therefrom to engage the adjacent end of the absorbent material 30, and a cover 32 for the nib, the marking fluid consists of a colouring material and a volatile carrier and the nib 28 is of absorbent material having more densely compacted fibres than the absorbent material 30 and in sufficient surface contact with the material 30 to permit the marking fluid therein to pass to and through the nib by capillarity. The reservoir 10 is of glass and a metal cap 14 is screwed thereon, the two parts being surrounded by a cellulose acetate shroud 34. The nib holder 22 which is of aluminium is retained in a hole in the 'cap 14 by flanges 24, 26 and discs 18, 20 are clamped between the flange 24 and the cap 14 and between the cap 14 and the upper edge of the reservoir 10. The disc 18 of paper having a polyvinyl coating and the disc 20 of a plastic which is inert to the solvent used in the ink help to make a vapour-tight seal between the cap and the reservoir. The nib 28 is a piece of felt secured in the nib holder by burrs 58 punched in the holder. The nib 28 and carrier 30 are both of rectangular cross-section so as to form air passages between their sides and the substantially circular walls of the nib-holder 22 and reservoir 10. Channels 35 cut in two sides of the carrier 30 serve as guides for tweezers used in putting the carrier into the reservoir and also form air passages where the carrier is compressed to fit into the neck of the reservoir. The cover 32 frictionally engages the nib-holder 22 and is removable. Specification 628,350 is referred to.
