Abstract

849,629. Reservoir pens. KAHN Inc., D. Dec. 11, 1956 [Dec. 23, 1955], No. 37816/56. Class 146(3). In reservoir pens, particularly of the ball-point type, having an ink reservoir 12 of non-capillary cross-section, leakage of ink through the rear end of the reservoir is prevented by one or more thin flexible discs 21 which rest on the end of the ink column 20 and contact the interior surface of the reservoir. The material of the discs 21, which must be inert with respect to the ink, may comprise polyethylene, polystyrene, nylon, or flexible glass ; and the ink may have a fatty acid base, be quick drying, and have a viscosity of between 16,000 and 20,000 centipoises at 20‹C. Where the reservoir is cylindrical and of inner diameter of 0À16 ins., three discs 21 of polyethylene having each a thickness of 0À0015 ins. and a diameter of 0À16 ins. may be used. The thickness of each disc 21 is increased when the inner diameter of the reservoir is increased, the resiliency of the discs being such that they will follow the end of the ink column as ink is consumed. Reservoirs of oval, rectangular, or other cross-section may be used, and may be made of polyethylene, polystyrene, acrylate and methacrylate resins, brass, or steel : the discs 21 will be shaped correspondingly. As shown, discs 21 are stamped from superposed sheets 31 by a tubular cutter 30 and die 32, the discs being retained within the lower end of the cutter until a plunger 33 is actuated to thrust them into the open rear end of the pen reservoir 12. The plunger 33 has a smaller diameter than the discs, so that the peripheral portions of the discs are unsupported during their insertion in the reservoir, and air can thus escape past the discs during this operation. In a modification, each cut-out disc 21 may be retained on the end of an inserting plunger, as by a vacuum, and then deposited on to the end of the ink column.
