859,441. Covers for resisting fluid pressure. HERAEUS G.m.b.H., W. C. May 22, 1957 [July 28, 1956], No. 16298/57. Class 123(1) [Also in Group XXIX] Accidental explosions within a vacuum working vessel having a lid are guarded against by mounting the lid on a yieldable rear hinge which permits normal working of the vessel from the front, the lid being locked in the closed position during operation by a front locking arrangement which allows the lid to pivot thereabout in the event of an explosion so that the lid tends to lift at the rear and an operator stationed in front of the vessel is protected from the force of the explosion. As shown, a vacuum vessel 3 incorporating cooling jackets in the body and lid thereof has a lid 9 closable on a gasket 29. The lid is hingedly mounted at the rear about a pin 15 retained in a recessed bracket 14 between rubber bushes 17, 18 below and above the pin 15 and by vertically disposed thin deformable metal sheets 19 e.g. of aluminium, secured to the outside of the bracket 14 so as to cover up the recess 16 above the pad 18. The front locking arrangement comprises a screwed rod 22 pivoted to the body and having a spherically seated locknut 21 which seats on a lug of the lid, the rod assuming an outward inclination to the vessel in the closed position, so as to exert a centralizing effect on the lid in the event of minor explosions which do not deform the sheets 19. The lid is normally lifted hydraulically by a piston and cylinder arrangement, as shown.
