Abstract

858,962. Electric correspondence control systems. BENDIX CORPORATION, [formerly BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION]. Sept. 6, 1957 [Oct. 25, 1956], No. 28243/57. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXVII] The duration of opening of electromagnetically operated fuel injection valves 19 is controlled by varying in accordance with engine Operating conditions the voltage applied to a primary coil 12 coupled by a core 14 to a secondary coil 16 which energizes the valveoperating solenoids. A voltage E is connected through potentiometers R 1 ... R 4 to the centre tapping of the coil 12, the opposite ends of which are connected to alternate segments 26 of a rotary switch having an earthed wiper arm 24 rotating as a function of engine speed, which arm connects the opposite ends of the coil to earth in succession so that the current flows alternately in opposite directions through the two halves 12a, 12b of coil 12. The time taken for the flux in core 14 to change from positive to negative saturation, and hence the time duration of the current induced in coil 16, is controlled by the voltage applied to coil 12 and is varied by adjustment of the potentiometers R 1 ... R 4 in accordance with engine variables such as ambient temperature and pressure, engine temperature, induction pipe pressure, and exhaust temperature and pressure. The valve solenoids are connected to corresponding contacts 20a ... 20h which are connected to earth by the arm 24 in succession, in accordance with the cylinder firing order, at the times when a current is induced in the coil 16, thereby completing the circuit of the appropriate injector valve which is opened for a period controlled by the potentiometers R 1 ... R 4 . Specification 858,961 is referred to.
