Abstract
An alkyl borate ester is made by contacting a solution comprising an alcohol of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and a boron source soluble in this alcohol, with a water-immiscible solvent whose density differs from the density of this solution sufficiently to allow a phase separation, and removing the water-immiscible solvent, with the alkyl borate ester in solution in it. The term "boron source" means boric oxide, boric acid, borax and a mineral acid or a borate-containing ore and a mineral acid. The alkyl borate ester may be separated from the solvent by distillation. The process is applicable to continuous operation where the alcohol and boron source are fed into an extraction apparatus with solvent, the solvent containing dissolved ester is fed to a distillation apparatus where the ester is distilled off and the stripped solvent is recycled to the extraction apparatus. Suitable solvents are kerosene, naphtha, mineral oils, liquid paraffins, cyclo-paraffins or halogenated derivatives thereof and mixtures thereof.
