Abstract
Boron hydrocarbons are produced by heating a boron alkyl containing two or more carbon atoms in the alkyl residue to a temperature of at least 100 DEG C. with an ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon, corresponding to the hydrocarbon radicals of the boron hydrocarbon to be produced. The reaction is assisted by removing the olefine which is formed during the reaction. When a readily volatile compound is used or formed in the reaction it is convenient to carry out the reaction under pressure in a closed vessel. The reaction can also be carried out in an inert solvent such as a saturated aliphatic or an aromatic hydrocarbon, or an ether, or in an excess of the olefine used as a reagent. Examples describe the preparation of boron triethyl, boron tri-decyls, boron tri-(2-phenylpropyl), boron trihexadecyl, boron tri(cyclohexyl) and boron tri-bicyclo-(2,22, 1)-heptyl. Boron tri-decyl is titrated with perbenzoic acid to form a nonalkyl boric acid dialkyl ester.
