In a ball-point pen wherein the writing unit 4 is mounted in an outer tubular casing 1, one part 3 of the tip of the casing is adapted to yield transversely to allow transverse resilient movements of the unit 4 during writing. As shown, the tip of the casing 1 comprises two parts 2, 3, the part 2 being screwed rigidly into the casing by means of threaded extension 2<SP>1</SP> thereon, and the part 3 has an extension 3<SP>1</SP> carrying an annular portion 3<SP>11</SP> which bears on a rocker edge 2<SP>11</SP> on the extension 2<SP>1</SP>. A compression spring 5 is arranged between a shoulder 4<SP>1</SP> on the unit 4 and the portion 311 to urge the latter against the rocker edge 2<SP>11</SP> : where the unit 4 is retractably mounted in the casing 1, the spring 5 also serves as the retracting means. In use, if the pen is used with the tip part 3 uppermost, the writing unit 4 will yield resiliently transversely since the portion 3<SP>11</SP> will rock about the edge 2<SP>11</SP> ; but if the part 2 is uppermost, the unit will be held rigidly transversely. In a modification, the extension 3<SP>1</SP> is a leaf spring, the upper end of which is rigidly secured to the part 2 or casing 1, and the coil spring 5 is omitted. The writing unit 4 may be arranged to yield elastically axially of the casing I during writing. The yieldable part 3 is indicated on the pen is any manner, perferably by being shaped differently from the part 2.
