Abstract

858,010. Pie-moulding machines. FOOD MACHINERY & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 18, 1957 [April 30, 1956], No.11173/60. Divided out of 858,007. Class 87(2). A machine for conveying articles such as pies in single file, has a rotary housing 62, Fig. 4, carrying a plurality of units 64 for tamping and perforating the upper surface of each article in timed relationship with the movement of the article. The housing is mounted on a horizontal axis adjacent the conveyer and carries three tamping and perforating units 64 adapted through gear means to perform an orbital translatory movement on the housing. Each unit 64 has a lower perforated tamping plate 110 that can be forced upwardly against spring means 108, 109 to cause aligned perforating members 121 on an upper plate 122 to extend therethrough. In operation, Fig. 9, a conveyer carries a pie P past the mechanism and as a unit 64 moves into contact with the pie the tamping motion of the plate 110 against the surface of the pie is stopped when a roller 114, Fig. 10, on the plate 110 engages a guide block 116. Further downward motion of the unit 64 then causes the springs 108, 109 to be compressed as the perforating members 121 pass through the lower plate 110 to perforate the upper crust of the pie P. Fig. 10 illustrates the withdrawal of the perforating members 121 from the surface of the pie P, the springs 108, 109, maintaining the tamping plate 110 in contact with the pie until the perforating members 121 have been completely withdrawn. A pair of guide rods 118 and 119 overlie the outer edges of the pie adjacent the tamping mechanism to prevent the pie being raised from the conveyer 50 by adherence of the crust to the tamping plate 110. The pie tamping and perforating mechanism indicated at B in Fig. 1, forms part of a machine in which the pies are fed by a conveyer A past the mechanism B, and are then inserted at station F into cartons which have been erected by a mechanism D and inserted between blocks 133 on an endless conveyer E. The filled cartons then pass through a carton closing and locking mechanism G. The mechanism G, the mechanism D and the conveyer A are described in Specifications 858,007, 858,008 and 858,009 respectively.
