Abstract

857,927. Mixing gases in flow. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. May 21, 1951 [May 21, 1957], No. 16167/57. Class 86 [Also in Group VI] Relates to a method of and an apparatus for mixing at least two gases and maintaining the composition of the mixture substantially constant over a range of flow rates of the mixture. As shown, nitrous oxide and oxygen are supplied to a mixing chamber 1 through regulating valves 11, 5 and adjustable metering orifices 3, 4, the outlet 2 of the chamber 1 being connected to a free mask. The valve 5 is urged towards the closed position by a light spring 7 and is connected to a dia phragm 8 which is under the urge of a spring 9 balancing the diaphragm with respect to the mean oxygen inlet pressure. The valve 11 is urged towards the closed position by a light spring 13 and is connected to a diaphragm 14 which is under the urge of a spring 16 adjustable by a screw 17. The chamber of the diaphragm 14 is connected by a passage 15 with the outlet 2 the pressure of which tends to shut the valve 11. The valve seat 12 of the valve 11 is connected by a passage 10 with the chamber of the diaphragm 8. In operation a reduction in pressure at the outlet 2 due to inoperation, causes the diaphragm 14 to move to the right and open the valve 11 the nitrous oxide pressure then acting through the passage 10 to open the valve 5 until the pressures of the oxygen and the nitrous oxide delivered to the orifices 4, 3, are equal. Conversely an increase of pressure at the outlet 2 causes the valves to close.
