Abstract

The invention relates to a salt of methionine, glutamic acid or a N-acyl derivative thereof with a basic antibiotic such as streptomycin, dihydrostreptomycin, neomycin or viomycin. The p salt is prepared by reacting the basic antibiotic, or a salt thereof, with the amino acid or a salt thereof. It is preferred to use the sulphate of the antibiotic and the alkaline earth metal salts of the amino-acid. The salts may also be prepared by ion interchange with ion exchange resins. The examples illustrate the preparation of (a) streptomycin DL-methioninate, (b) dihydrostreptomycin L- glutamate, (c) dihydrostreptomycin L- methioninate and (d) neomycin DL- methioninate. The salts have low toxicity. Specification 771,338 is referred to.
