Class 64(1) A steam power plant comprises a generator 1 feeding a turbine 4 and a condenser 5 from which feed water is heated in a plurality of stages before being fed to the generator. The feed water is divided at 8 to pass along two parallel paths 9, 9<SP>1</SP> wherein feedwater heaters 10 to 15 in the path 9 are heated by tapped steam from the turbine whereas heaters 18 to 21 in path 9<SP>1</SP> are heated by steam which is separated from a tapping by separator 23 of the generator between the vaporizing and superheating stages, by separators 25 to 28. The feedwater passing through path 9<SP>1</SP> may be drawn from path 9 at any of the junctions 38, 39 or 40 and may be fed back into path 9 through any of the pipes 46 to 50 depending on the temperatures of the two parallel paths of feed water, each of these junctions and pipes being controlled by valves. Water draining off from the final separator 28 may pass as waste through valve 59 or may pass through a salts removing plant 30 back into the feed water system.
